Another example of musical integration, and one appropriate for the day, came during Bing Crosby's Merrie Olde Christmas TV show from 1977, when he and David Bowie sang what has become known as "Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy". I remember thinking at the time that we were watching an instant classic, one that would be remembered for many years to come. The piece itself is a blend of the old and new, as "Peace on Earth" was written for the occasion. And the performance, by two great artists, can only leave us with the realization that both the modern and the traditional are necessary for the creation of good music. Happy holidays.
